Whitening (Bleaching)

What is Tooth Whitening?

Tooth Whitening is actually a mild bleaching process that restores stained or discolored teeth to a healthy, natural color. Our office uses an advanced procedure, Zoom2, that is only available from your dentist.

What Causes Tooth Discoloration?

Teeth become discolored for different reasons:

  • Frequently drinking coffee, tea, or colas.
  • Some antibiotics may darken developing teeth in children.
  • Aging - The dentin underneath the enamel of a tooth gradually darkens with age.
  • Use of tobacco products.
  • Accidents - If a tooth has been traumatized, sometimes the nerve will gradually "die", and the tooth becomes dark.
  • After Root Canal Therapy or Pulp Therapy, a tooth will generally darken.

Is Whitening Safe?

Whitening is very safe. We use a product that has been proven safe when used under the direction of a dentist.

Is Whitening For My Child?

Dr. Sklar will evaluate your child's teeth and smile to determine whether they are a good candidate for the procedure. In some cases a different cosmetic procedure may better meet your expectations, but whitening is a safe, fast and easy process that is effective for almost everyone! It is especially helpful to brighten the post-orthodontic smile that patients have waited so long to achieve! We do not consider a patient for whitening under the age of 13.

What Is The Whitening Process?

bleaching trayTooth whitening is accomplished in a series of three appointments:

1. Impressions are taken for custom fitted trays for future use at home to brighten up your smile if necessary. A special conditioning paste is given to the patient to apply twice daily for two weeks to minimize any post operative sensitivity. Pre-operative photos will be taken.

The whitening gel is then applied and the light placed over your teeth for three fifteen minute exposures. The light and gel work together to gently penetrate your teeth, breaking up stains and discoloration. With proper care your smile will sparkle for years.

3. A twenty-four hour post operative check is scheduled and photos are taken. Some additional whitening will occur during those first post operative hours.

When Will We See Results?

Immediately! Your teeth will lighten up to eight shades during the whitening procedure.

How Long Will The Results Last?

By following some simple post whitening care instructions your teeth will always be lighter than they were before. To keep your teeth looking their best, we recommend flossing, brushing twice daily and occasional touch ups with Zoom2 Nite White gel in your custom trays. This product is available through our office.

What Does a Patient Experience during the Zoom2 In-Office Procedure?

During the procedure, patients may comfortably listen to music or watch television. Individuals with a strong gag reflex or anxiety should speak to Dr. Sklar about their concerns prior to scheduling any appointments.
